The 13 part documentaries ,which cover all 9 provinces and are 48 minutes in length. These will be broadcasted on television later on this year. The series aims is to use young people to tell their own heritage stories that may have been neglected in the past and to have them digitized for future generations. The subject matter of the documentaries vary from the African participation in the Anglo Boer War to the histories of African Kings during the start of the colonial era.

On the 7th May 2012 the first two teams left Johannesburg ,one headed to Mahikeng in the NorthWest and the other Verana in Mpumalanga.

The NorthWest team is lead by Molatelo Mainetje ( a graduate of NEMISA from 2001) ; they are telling a story concieved by Jabu Xanti a native of NorthWest and an accountant by profession, the story is called "The Siege of Mafikeng - In search of black heroes". Which looks at the role of the Barolong during the siege of the then Mafikeng. The rest of the team compromises of Karabo Maimane (sound- NEMISA graduate ) , Sanele Mghobozi (camera - NEMISA graduate ) ,Jabu Xanti (Production Assistant) and Molatelo Mainetje (Director)

The team that went to Mpumalanga is being led by a native of Mpumalanga Peter Bhuti Mopai, who penned the story of "KwaNdebele Uprising". The documentary mainly deals with the conflict that arose as some people were against the former Kwa Ndebele government and the Mbokotho cultural group forced intergration of Moutse into the KwaNdebele state.

Peter is passionte about the story and the fact that it hasnot been publicized enough, especially to the general South African population outside Mpumalanga. Peter is a NEMISA graduate from 2009 and this will be his first directorial debut on a documentary ,his team is made up of Ernest Simbini (Camera person- NEMISA graduate) , Monnapule Molapo (Sound person- NDR cadre) and Mzwandile (Production Assistant)

These first two shoots will be completed over the weekend and post production will commence the following week. By October all 13 documentaries would have been completed, new and young professionals would have also gained valuable working experience and more of our heritage as South Africans would have been digitized for future generations.

In line with the Word Summit on Information Society of which South Africa is a signatory, the Department initiated a National Digital Repository on cultural heritage whose strategic thrust is to capture, digitise and disseminate South Africa's cultural heritage. This was also to address South Africa's past imbalance of historical collection. It is meant to complement efforts by the National Department of Arts and Cultureon fostering social cohesion and national identity.

In implementing this programme young people were capacitated to collect relevant content in their communities. In this current financial year the department is in the process of soliciting proposals from young people to collect relevant content which will contribute to job creation. This programme seeks to collect content from all the provinces with specific focus on rural areas where cultural heritage content can be found. This programme is done through the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa, which has the responsibility of for local content digitisation amongst others.

Furthermore, the Department will focus on the establishment of Content Generation Hubs which will play an important role in the gereneration of local content. The migration from analogue to a digital broadcasting environment which allows for increased number of channels will necessitate the need for additional content for broadcasting.

On Wednesday, February 29 2012 we were fortunate to have the pleasure of hosting International Designers for a Design Workshop on Typography through the assistance of Greenside Design Center. We

Guest Lecturers: Lebanese Graphic Designer – Dr Antoine Abi Aa and Lebanese Interior Architect – Mr Marc-Antoine Kikano

Prior to the Workshop, Graphic Design 3rd year learners, and some 2nd year learners (together with their Design lecturers: Tebogo Serobatse, Sibongile Imenda and Elsie de Beer-Weich) attended a Design Hub hosted by Greenside Design Center on Monday evening, in which they were introduced to the works of the Guest Lecturers, and had opportunity to mingle with students from other institutions.

The workshop was opened by Tebogo Serobatse (Head of Animation + Graphic Design) who began by presenting NEMISA student work showcasing typography, font design and posters promoting the designed fonts. She also showed and spoke about African symbolism and how our students have interpreted different African symbolism that they have researched through in Design Literacy to show the Guest Lecturers have we have used African Aesthetics in Teaching & Learning.

Dr Antoine Abi Aad who studied in Japan and lived there for seven years, presented his work regarding the visual mixture of the three languages spoken and mixed verbally in his home country Lebanon to the students. Dr Abi Aad spoke to the students about Lebanon and gave them a brief history to help them understand the background to his decision to come up with a visual interpretation of the Lebanese way of speaking which shows the country’s English, French and Arabic heritage. He also spoke about the challenges he faced in trying to combine these languages as a written language.

Lebanese Interior Architect Marc-Antoine Kikano impressed the students with his architectural work and his cutting edge designs for the interiors of night clubs and other domestic interior spaces which he has worked on. He also spoke to the students about the challenges he faced in working with traditional Lebanese buildings and converting them into modern functioning spaces. Marc was impressed by the interest shown by the students in his architectural work and he was surprised to receive so many questions about architecture from graphic design students.

Dr Abi Aad spoke to the students again and presented the work he did in Japan where he was asked to create illustrations out of Chinese characters that are used by the Japanese. He showed samples of work that he did in Kenya with students who were inspired to create their own character illustrations to show compassion and support for Japan during the earthquake disaster. He spoke to the students and showed them samples of work produced in Peru and Brazil for the same project, “Poster for Tomorrow”.

The students were given an opportunity again to ask questions and to try out some of Chinese characters called Kanji. Students were finally shown different Kanji’s and were given a chance to select some characters and to interpret them in their own unique ways to demonstrate their South Africanism. Dr Abi Aad was very impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the learners and the work that they produced. The work done by the learners was collected and it will be added to Dr Abi Aad’s future presentations featuring work done by South African learners.

The students found the workshop inspiring and they enjoyed the interaction with international designers. For more images, please visit our website.

Working hypothesis and interpretation

- We want to know what your persuasions are about the world you are going to show in your documentary, the main “statement” that you want to emerge out of the story. Write a hypothesis statement incorporating this wording:

In life I believe that:

The documentary will show this in action by exploring (situation):

The main conflict is between:

Ultimately, I want the audience to feel:

And to understand that:

      TREATMENT

      FORM AND STYLE

Any special considerations in shooting, editing style or use of multimedia formats in your documentary.

Clearly comment on how narrative, lighting, camera handling, type and amount of intercutting, juxtaposition of scenes, parallel storytelling and the like is going to be used and how.

     ROUGH BREAKDOWN

      Breakdown the story showing how will it develop and the duration of each segment;

How will you handle the progression of time in the film?

How and at what point will important information appear in the story development and how will the story develop from segment to segment

What is your intended climactic segment and where does it fall in place within the story

How this (climatic segment) relate to other sequences in terms of the action rising toward the documentary’s projected “crisis” or emotional apex and the falling action after it

Sequences or interviews you intend to use as parallel storytelling (mention them by name or function)

CONFLICT

What sort of conflict does your documentary have or raise in the viewer? Explain:

- Who wants what of whom?

- What conflicting principles do the characters or ideas stand for?

- Does your documentary put different principles in opposition (of opinion, of view, of vision and so forth)?

- How will we see one force finally meet with the other? (the “confrontation”--very important)

- What range of possible developments do you see emerging from this confrontation?

AUDIENCE BIASES

To make a documentary means not only using conflicting “evidence” to put forward your subject’s dialectics, it also means knowing what stereotypes or expectations carried by your audience your film must deliberately set out to alter. Define:

- Biases (may be positive or negative) - what are your audience’s biases

- What alternative views, facts or ideas does the audience need to understand?

- What evidence will you show to get the audience to see those different truths?

- Who is your audience?

MAIN CHARACTERS

Write a brief paragraph about each of your main characters. For each include:

- Who (name, relationship to others in the documentary and so on)

- Where (where does this person fit in the scheme of things?)

- What (what is this character’s role, what makes the character(s) interesting, worthy of special attention and significant? What is this character trying to do or to get at?)

ON-CAMERA INTERVIEWS

For each interview, list:

- Name, role in life, metaphoric role in film’s dramatic structure

- Main elements your interview will seek to establish

- Examples of possible questions

            RESOLUTION

Write a brief paragraph about how you imagine your documentary will end and what you would like the ending to accomplish for the audience. Comparing any intended ending with the film’s beginning also express what must the story accomplish to get there? The ending is your last word to the audience and has a disproportionate influence on what the film will mean. What is yours?

The National Digital Repository serves to collect, preserve, promote and disseminate South Africa's cultural heritage through young South Africans. Give the youth a chance to tell their own stories from their own communities. Thus far the primary point of dissemination has been the site www.ndr.org.za

In 2012 the project takes the sharing of our cultural heritage one step further through the medium of broadcast television. This marks an ambitious plan to improve the quality, creative value of the information and videos produced by the NDR through producing a 13 part documentary series fully shot in HD. This series will be ambitious in scope and aesthetic. Pushing the envelope creatively and aesthetically whilst engaging the youth in both form and content about our heritage as South Africans. Ultimately the series will be for international and local release .

The series will concentrate on the following themes below:

Identity Development is series of Guest Lectures that fuse elements of problem solving and life skills with an introduction to the Design Practice. Particular emphasis is placed on the practitioner, their tutelage, their place in the practice (where s/he can practise and in what ways), the attitudes and values of the practice, as well as the practitioner's interactions of other peripheral members of the practice.

Our third lecture was presented by Thembalethu Msibi on Resourceful Creative Ideas. She explained that ideas are plentiful; but that we need to aspire to imaginative and inventive ideas: ideas that stand out and are practical.

Thembalethu shared some designs from Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity with the learners.

In her lecturer, Thembalethu showed that it was the simplest ideas that made a large impact. She emphasised that it was important that students of the creative industries always stay inspired and motivated to create. In order to do this she encouraged that learners: read often, and read varied materials to keep their minds open to possibilities of the imagination.

NEMISA starts its performance cycle for 2011/12 with new vigour premised on its strategic plan for 2011/2014. The thrusts of the new strategic plan places NEMISA at the centre of multimedia and ICT solution for strengthening of our training and development trajectory while also increasing our involvement in Local Content Hub development.

We have just celebrated NEMISA’s 10 years of existence, through which time NEMISA has made strides in the transformation of the electronic media and broadcast sector by targeting skills development for youth from disadvantaged, poor areas as well as rural areas which are the risk of losing out on the benefits of the ICT revolution. NEMISA is proud of its contribution to the advancement of these youth by equipping them with skills and values that empower them to be productive and gainfully employed within multimedia and ICT sector.

NEMISA is planning to be a provider of choice in the training and development of skills in the ICT sector, with particular focus on broadcasting and electronic media as contained in our strategy plan for 2011-2014. We plan to develop the foundational aspects of the new NEMISA in this current financial year by strengthening the quality of training programmes that we offer as well as ensure that we fulfil in a much more comprehensive manner the platform for delivery of programmes straddling entry level skills, intermediary as well as skills at Further education and Higher education levels. We shall consolidate our internal capacity to deliver these as well as leverage on strategic partnerships that are being strengthened as well as new ones that are being initiated nationally and internationally with institutions within this sector.

NEMISA will also consolidate our partnerships with partners in especially the poor and rural provinces to expand our footprint thus giving youth from these areas equitable access to skills within easy reach. We shall partner with local radio stations to strengthen their capacity in terms of the range of skills required for them to run their stations on a sustainable level while leveraging their facilities to train quality programmes for stakeholders within those geographical areas.

We have started a process of carefully planning the resource requirements of carrying through the NEMISA strategy to fruition. We shall develop detailed plans for creating the necessary organisational structure that is well positioned to effectively carry out the new mandate in the most cost effective manner possible. We shall look into the appropriate Human Capital investments that are required, the appropriate Capital Infrastructure investments including an appropriate campus to promote an environment for optimal learning, the IT infrastructure that gives our graduates access to the latest technology entering the market as well as the appropriate IT infrastructure to support entity performance. The glue that will hold everything together will be the development and maintenance of an appropriate organisational culture that optimises and unleashes talent. Appropriate governance and management systems will ensure that NEMISA will increase its rate of productivity to ensure that we do more with minimum cost.

The glue that will hold everything together will be the development and maintenance of an appropriate organisational culture that optimises and unleashes talent. Appropriate governance and management systems will ensure that NEMISA will increase its rate of productivity to ensure that we do more with minimum cost.
